Toshi
Toshi is one of the most powerful and emotionally resonant voices in the global Afro House movement. Born in Kwalanga Township in Cape Town and raised between the cultural landscapes of the Eastern Cape, she carries within her music the spirit of South Africa’s ancestral traditions. Her voice — raw, spiritual, and unmistakably soulful — has become a defining element of the genre, shaping its evolution and inspiring producers and audiences around the world.
Her journey began at a young age, guided by the influence of her grandmother and the musical heritage of her community. Toshi developed not only as a singer, but also as a composer, guitarist, poet, and storyteller, weaving her artistic identity through multiple disciplines. Her early training in classical music at the University of Western Cape and later in jazz at the University of KwaZulu‑Natal expanded her technical foundation, but it was her return to her roots — to the music she felt in her bones — that defined her true artistic path.
Toshi’s breakthrough came with “Buya”, her iconic collaboration with Black Coffee, a track that became a timeless Afro House anthem and introduced her voice to the world. From there, she became one of the most sought‑after vocalists in the scene, collaborating with leading producers such as Black Motion, Da Capo, Lemon & Herb, Manoo, Armonica, FNX Omar, DJ Merlon, Stones & Bones, and many others. Her ability to infuse every performance with emotion, vulnerability, and spiritual depth has made her a cornerstone of the genre.
Her debut album, “Ubuhle Bendalo”, showcased her versatility and artistic maturity, blending Afro‑Soul, Afro House, and contemporary African electronic elements into a cohesive and deeply expressive body of work. In 2018, she was named #1 Vocalist on Traxsource, a recognition that cemented her status as one of the most influential voices in electronic music.
Toshi’s presence extends far beyond the studio. She has performed on major stages including the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Macufe Festival, and Africa Rising Live alongside Black Coffee and the Johannesburg Orchestra. Her live performances are known for their emotional intensity — a fusion of ritual, storytelling, and pure vocal power that captivates audiences across continents.
Today, Toshi continues to expand her artistic universe through new collaborations, including ongoing creative work with artists from Batuque Music, contributing her voice and songwriting to future releases within the label’s roster. Her artistry remains rooted in authenticity, cultural identity, and a profound connection to the spiritual essence of African music.
With a voice that feels ancient and a presence that is undeniably contemporary, Toshi stands as one of the most important and respected artists in Afro House — a true embodiment of the genre’s soul, strength, and evolution.
